Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Her father's death as a carnival barker, at the age of an infant She was required to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. She quit the school she was attending after only two years to pursue the profession of acting. This path was fraught with problems. After obtaining a position as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she had a difficult time trying to find work in the stage. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and moved back to Boston. She was in Boston when she worked at night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time she was an usherette. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
